How is UK income tax calculated?
UK income tax applies a Personal Allowance of £12,570 (frozen until 2028), then 20% basic rate up to £50,270, 40% higher rate up to £125,140, and 45% additional rate above that. The allowance tapers by £1 for every £2 above £100,000.
What is National Insurance (NI)?
Class 1 employee NI is charged at 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 per year, and 2% on earnings above £50,270. Your employer also pays NI separately.
